Do’s And Don’ts Of Writing A Resume

Are you applying for a job but are having trouble writing your resume? Well then, this blog might be of help. Making a resume is not an easy task especially if it is your first time. It requires you to be concise but brief. You should be able to place everything needed on a one-page A4 piece of paper. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts of writing a resume.


  • Keep your resume short and concise

  • As stated earlier, most employers don’t have time to read 5-page long resumes, nor do they have the energy to do so. Most of them are also not interested in reading your life story so it is important to be straight to the point and keep it short. 
  • Use bullet points to highlight your responsibilities and accomplishments.

  • Using bullet points makes it easier for the hiring manager to go through your resume and find relevant information to know how much value you brought to the company. Also, make sure your resume is well organized, no employer wants to read a cluttered resume and take too much time just to find the information they need.
  • Outline your career history and/or skills

  • There are three types of resumes namely chronological, functional, and combined. A chronological resume highlights your work history and is the most common resume used. A functional resume highlights your skills, this can be used if you have sizable gaps in your work history. Lastly, a combined resume focuses on both. You should make sure to give the necessary information in an understandable manner.
  • Be honest

  • Lying about your skills and accomplishments is never a good idea, although it’s tempting, hiring managers will eventually figure it out and it can get you into a lot of trouble. Instead, support your statements with facts and figures. This can serve as proof to hiring managers that you are honest about your skills and capabilities.


  • Use crazy fonts or too many colors

  • A resume should be easy to read, using cursive fonts can confuse your employer and make your resume harder to read. Instead use neat fonts like Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial. Also, avoid using too many fonts as this can clutter your resume, you can use two at most.
  • Now let’s move on to colors. Using colors in your resume is uncommon however some people still do it. Why? Well, using colors gives your resume personality. It spices up your resume and gives it a little fun. When using colors, remember that simple is key. Avoid filling your resume with too much color as this can sometimes irritate the eye and make it look dirty. If you want to use color, then it is suggested to use small amounts, enough to give your resume personality, but not too much to make it look cluttered. 
  • Use your company number and email

  • Using your company number and email can show that you are looking for a job while still working at your previous job. Hiring managers may not consider your resume because they might think you will do the same to them when they hire you.
  • Forget to put your contacts in your resume

  • Forgetting to put your contacts in your email is a common mistake for most people because it is already found at the bottom of the email that you sent. However, help your employer contact you easier and place your contact information like personal emails, contact number, and address in your resume.


There are a lot of things to remember when making a resume, using other references like professional resume examples can help you improve your resume. These are just some of the tips that can help you create a resume that will stand out from the rest.
